Topically, grapefruit has astringent, cleansing, and toning qualities.  It is often seen in topical thinning serums, wraps, and scrubs.  Note that grapefruit oil can cause photosensitivity, so avoid topical use with sun exposure.

History:  Grapefruit is said to be a hybrid of Jamaican sweet orange (Citrus sinensus) and Indonesian pomela (C. maxima).  The pomela was said to be brought over to the Caribbean by Captain Shaddock in the 17th century.  Thus, grapefruit were first called shaddocks.

Specific Safety Information:  Not for internal use.  Properly dilute with use.  General guidelines are to dilute to 2%, which equals about 10 drops of essential oil per ounce of a carrier oil like sweet almond, coconut, or jojoba.  Avoid topical use with sun exposure.  Also, avoid the use of oxidized essential oils.  This is a light essential oil with a six-month shelf life that shortens with exposure to oxygen.  Avoid use of essential oils with certain medical conditions.  Ask your doctor if you have any questions before use.
